Danger: Inattentive Eater

Studies have shown that distracted driving leads to car accidents. Now, a new study is pointing to distracted eating as a dangerous practice, health-wise, when TVs or computers are concerned.

To test the effects of eating while engaging in a screen-related activity, researchers from the Nutrition and Behaviour Unit at the University of Bristol in England divided participants into two groups. Both were given the same lunch consisting of nine different foods. However, one group played a game on a computer while eating and the other ate lunch without any distraction.

After the meal, the group members who were playing while eating reported being less full than the non-distracted group and ate significantly more snacks 30 minutes later. These results lead experts to conclude that, given the sedentary nature of screen-time activities, the increased food intake of those who eat while watching or playing could be contributing to increased obesity levels.

The study results appear in the January American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.
